Meet Audrey, a sophomore at South Lakes High School who is passionate about making a positive impact in her community. Audrey loves theater and is a stage manager at her school. She also works with the costumes and hair and make-up crews. But, rather than keeping theater as simply something she enjoys, Audrey has found ways to to give back to her community by making her passion more accessible to others.

As a member of Reston Stars, a local volunteer group, Audrey helps provide performing arts opportunities to kids in the community by fundraising for scholarships. “Whether it’s vocal lessons, instrument lessons, or participating in a summer musical, we help get them scholarships for the training they want,” she says. “We want the arts to be something everyone can experience, no matter their financial situation.”

Audrey also gives back in ways that extend beyond her passions. She has worked with Work Camp with the Arlington Diocese, which helps families in low-income areas repair their homes. “Whether it’s fixing roofs, replacing windows, or redoing siding on a trailer, we do whatever’s needed to make homes safe and livable,” she explains.

Despite a busy schedule, Audrey always makes time to give back, and she encourages others to do the same. “Everyone is busy. We all have a lot going on. But when we strengthen our community, we also strengthen our own support system. Giving back means adding more people to care about and support each other.”

Her advice to other kids and teens? Don’t wait and don’t underestimate your ability to make positive change. “You’re never too young to help out. Don’t be afraid to go big. If you’re passionate about something, reach out to someone in charge and ask how you can get involved.”

At the same time, Audrey believes small actions matter just as much as big ones. “If you don’t know where to start, ask your teacher if there's something you can do. It could be as simple as helping clean a classroom. Every little thing makes a difference.”
