It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking loss of a beloved member of our Reston Community.

Kamran “Buddy” Golesorkhi, was born at Reston Hospital in 2014 and was a student at Hunters Woods Elementary School. Buddy passed away on August 19 at the precious age of 11 after courageously battling a rare bone cancer called Osteosarcoma for 6 years. Buddy endured over a dozen surgeries, including four complex lung surgeries and three leg surgeries, two of which were life-changing amputations of his left leg. Buddy relapsed several times and had endured years of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, experimental therapy, and hundreds of clinic visits and arm pokes along the way. Buddy’s remarkable strength, resilience, and bravery never wavered—inspiring everyone in his wake. Buddy enjoyed having sushi at Ariake, riding his 4-wheeler, jet skiing, golfing, playing video games with his friends and spending time with his beloved chocolate labrador Coconut. Our community is better for having known him, and his loss is felt profoundly.

On behalf of the Reston community, we extend our deepest condolences to Buddy’s friends and family, including his big sister, Darya, who is a freshman at South Lakes High School. We grieve together as a community and will continue to embrace the Golesorkhi family in the months and years ahead.

In honor of Buddy’s legacy, his family is working toward funding a second osteosarcoma research grant in his name. Last year, they were able to raise $70,000 with $50,000 that contributed towards a Young Investigator Scientific Research Grant led by Dr. Janeala Morsby at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With the continued support of our Reston community, we hope to surpass that milestone this year and help improve outcomes for other families suffering from this rare and underfunded cancer.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate Directly: Contributions can be made through this donation link on Buddy’s fundraising page. https://www.mibagents.org/family-funds/buddy

  • Swishes and Serves: Reston Hoops & Reston Volleyball will host the second annual Swishes and Serves in the near future—a fun community event to raise funds for this important cause. Please consider attending or participating.

As we dearly remember Buddy and his forever smile, let us carry forward his infectious spirit of resilience, strength, courage and determination.
