In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty all around us, it is easy to focus our energy on managing our own responsibilities. We may lose sight of the importance of taking care of each other. Now, more than ever, we need to lean into every opportunity for kindness and connection. In fact, a simple yet powerful action can bring joy into our lives and those around us: doing one good thing every day.
Small acts of goodwill, compassion, and gratitude are among the many choices we can control, and these gestures not only improve our own mindsets, but also remind others to “pass it on” and notice other goodness around them. A 2017 Psychology Today article, “The One Good Deed A Day Approach to Happiness,” indicates that one such act creates purpose and meaning in our lives.
So, how can we incorporate acts of goodness into our daily lives? It may be as straightforward as smiling at a co-worker, a stranger on the Metro, or a cashier at the grocery store, holding the door open for someone entering behind you, or allowing someone to merge in traffic ahead of you. Other examples include:
Expressing gratitude for people in our lives, such as family, friends, colleagues, service providers, and even people we do not know. A heartfelt note or a verbal thank you allows those in our lives to feel valued.
Offering to assist a neighbor, an elderly person, or a community are all opportunities to partner with someone who might be struggling. Volunteering your time and helping others feels good and reminds people that they are not alone.
Listening to others is one of the best gifts we can give. In a world full of judgment and reactivity, instead of offering solutions, be a reliable and empathetic listener.
Let’s do what we can to take care of ourselves and each other.
Psych’d to see you next month!
