The Washington West Film Festival will host the East Coast premiere of “JIMMY,” a biographical drama about actor Jimmy Stewart on Saturday, Oct. 10 at LOOK Cinemas in Reston Town Center. The festival runs Oct. 8-12.
KJ Apa (“Riverdale”) stars as Stewart in the film, which follows the actor
from his Academy Award-winning performance in “The Philadelphia Story” through his service as a combat pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Stewart flew 20 combat missions over Europe and rose to the rank of colonel before returning to Hollywood and taking the role of George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful
Life.”
The film is directed by Aaron Burns and written by Justin Strawhand. Stewart’s daughter, Kelly Stewart Harcourt, is an executive producer.
The festival also will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” in recognition of the film’s 80th anniversary. Grimes was 6 when she appeared in the 1946 film. Grimes is best known for the film’s closing line: “Teacher says, every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.”
Founded in 2011, the Washington West Film Festival is based in Reston and presents independent films at venues in the Washington, D.C., area. Its events also raise money for charitable causes.
