An evening of laughs, love, and fairy tale fun is in store for audiences of all ages at South Lakes High School Theatre Arts’ production of “Once Upon a Mattress,” on May 1, 2 and 3. This delightful musical comedy brings a fresh twist to the classic fairy tale of “The Princess and the Pea,” with a host of quirky characters, catchy songs, and plenty of humor.

“Once Upon a Mattress” tells the story of Princess Winnifred (Clara Neag), an unconventional, free-spirited woman who sets out to prove she is a true princess, worthy of marrying the shy and sweet Prince Dauntless (Justin Burnett). The show follows Winnifred’s comical attempts to win over the royal family, who have set impossible tests to determine her eligibility.

Under the guidance of Director Michael Viola, the student production team, made up of a production manager, two technical directors, two stage managers, two student directors, and three student choreographers, works closely with an adult mentor to achieve theatrical brilliance in both performance and production elements. “This production is the funniest I have ever been a part of,” said Viola. “The antics are wild!”

The talented cast and crew will bring this enchanting story to life with vibrant costumes, memorable performances, and high-energy choreography. “Every rehearsal brightens my mood because of everyone’s commitment to the comedy in the show,” said cast member Iman Hassan.
