Racing in Reston celebrated the success of the Reston Youth Triathlon (RYT), held July 20, where more than 200 athletes ages 5 to 17 completed age-appropriate courses. A highlight of this year’s race was the record-breaking participation from Cornerstones’ Laurel Learning Center, which brought its largest group of young competitors to date.
CORE Foundation sponsored the registrations for Laurel Learning Center participants, continuing a partnership that began in 2011 when the center first joined the triathlon community. Together, CORE Foundation and Racing in Reston use multisport events to inspire connections, empower volunteers, and raise funds for local needs. This year, the foundation raised nearly $94,000 to support projects that address societal challenges and create positive change.
One of its most impactful initiatives provides underserved youth with athletic shoes, bicycles, and resources so they can participate in sports with confidence—removing financial barriers and leveling the playing field.
“Watching the young athletes from Laurel Learning Center cross the finish line—many for the first time—was inspiring,” said Megan Murphy, CORE Foundation’s Executive Director. “The energy, determination, and joy on their faces reminded us why this work matters. With encouragement and support, these children show us that anything is possible.”
Reston Triathlon Date Change
Racing in Reston also announced a new date for the upcoming Reston Triathlon. Originally scheduled for Sept. 7, the event will take place on Sept. 28 due to blue-green algae conditions in Lake Audubon, the site of the swim course. All race times and event details remain unchanged.
“The safety and health of our athletes is our top priority,” said Jen Dryzga, Race Director. “While we’re disappointed to adjust our timeline, moving to Sep. 28 ensures all participants can compete safely in clean water conditions.”
Athletes already registered will automatically be transferred to the new date. Those unable to participate on Sept. 28 may contact Racing in Reston for transfer or donation options.
Looking Ahead: 20th Anniversary Celebration
Racing in Reston is also preparing for a milestone event on May 31, 2026, when its signature race, the Reston Sprint Triathlon, celebrates its 20th anniversary. The event typically draws nearly 1,000 athletes and has become a cornerstone of community building, athletic achievement, and fundraising for local causes.
“Twenty years of bringing our community together through sport is truly special,” said Doug Bushée, CORE Foundation founder. “We’re planning something extraordinary to mark this milestone and celebrate everyone who has been part of the journey.”
CORE Foundation, a Reston-based nonprofit, uses funds from the Racing in Reston series to promote healthy lifestyles while supporting charitable initiatives.
