During the pandemic shutdown, many people tried new hobbies—sourdough bread, sewing masks, tie-dye, and puzzles. For then–8-year-old Lawson Elligers, it was balloon twisting. What began as a way to stay busy has since grown into Lawson’s Party Entertainment, a thriving business now run by the 13-year-old entrepreneur.
Lawson first learned by watching online tutorials and experimenting with trial and error. His early balloon creations were simple, but his skills quickly grew. Over time, he mastered more complex designs, connected with other balloon artists, and even collaborated with balloon brands to create unique, high-quality experiences. He hopes to pursue more partnerships in the future.
At first, Lawson entertained primarily as a volunteer. As people began to notice his work, he realized he could turn it into a business. At just 8 years old, he started booking paid gigs under his business name.
Since then, he has performed at more than 100 events, ranging from birthday parties to corporate gatherings and large community festivals—including last spring’s Reston Fine Arts Festival. Most of his business has grown through word-of-mouth and social media shares, which have led to new opportunities. Lawson reinvests much of his earnings into supplies and advanced designs, while saving most of the rest.
Family support has been key along the way. His parents helped him get started and continue to provide encouragement, but they step back to let him run the business, handle customers, and make decisions himself.
Outside of balloon twisting, Lawson enjoys juggling, art, and performing magic tricks. “I’ve always enjoyed creative projects that make people smile,” he says. “Balloon art lets me combine creativity with entertainment, and I’m excited to see how far I can expand my business.”
