Have you ever watched a puppy gobble up its food? They chomp and gulp so fast, you’d think someone might steal their dinner! Puppies don’t think much about the taste, smell, or feel of their food. They just want it in their bellies right now!

People sometimes eat like puppies too. We might rush through our lunch or snack while watching TV or playing games, not even tasting what we’re eating. But there’s a better way —it’s called mindful eating. Mindful eating means paying close attention to our food and enjoying every bite. It helps us feel happier, healthier, and more satisfied.

Here are some simple ways to eat mindfully, so you don’t gobble like a puppy:

  1. Look at your food: notice the colors, shapes, and textures before taking a bite.

  2. Take small bites and chew slowly: see if you can taste all the flavors.

  3. Put your fork or spoon down between bites: this gives your body time to feel full.

  4. Eat without distractions: try turning off screens and paying attention to your meal instead.

  5. Say thank you: think about how your food got to your plate and feel grateful for it.

Next time you sit down to eat, try being mindful and notice how different it feels. Unlike our silly puppy friends, you can enjoy your food slowly and fully. Give it a try—your belly and your brain will thank you!
